Oh, River is not a morning person, but this prank requires some dedication and preparation.  She has her sonic screwdriver set to wake her an hour before the alarm, and she'd packed the blanket and the picnic basket the afternoon before while he was out running.

The matter of the prank itself is a simple few moments with the screwdriver on the red setting.  Quick.  Harmless.  And best of all, reversible. 

She still expects to get a bit of a hiding for it, but he did throw down the gauntlet.  Her cheeks ache from grinning at the very thought of the look on his face when he figures out just what she'd done.

Prank accomplished, she slips into her boots and shushes Damocles, swearing him to silence.  Rather, bribing him with future promises of bacon.  She leaves the note on the pillow and catches herself just before she kisses him on the cheek.  If he wakes, the surprise will be ruined before she can make her escape.

Have been kidnapped by rabbits.  They said something about their pelts being used for "unseemly" purposes. Their leader says, if you ever want to see me again, come alone.

His eyes narrow slightly at the order, but the smile stays sincere. Anyway, he's hungry and was going to do that anyway.

He chews thoughtfully for a time.

"I've been thinking," he says after a swallow. "That little device of yours, the screen, do you think you could incorporate that into something else?"

If she knew how to say 'before it gets cold' in canine, perhaps it would have seemed less like an order and more like a practical suggestion.

"I guess that would depend on what you wanted it incorporated into. I mean it's not precisely a delicate instrument, but neither will it sustain being crushed or jostled around much."

"That should be fine. I was thinking the HSG in the weapons room."

He pulls a piece off the rabbit and holds it out towards her mouth.

"HSG?"

She parts her lips and accepts it from his fingers with a delicate bite, humming a little in contentment.

He smiles and brings his fingers back to his mouth to lick them clean.

"Sorry, the Holtzman shield generator. It's the bum bag in there."

He's assuming 'shield generator' conveys what it is clearly enough.

"Shield generator?" She sits up at that, holding out a piece of cheese apple in offering. "That isn't twentieth century technology, is it?"

He takes the piece, not particularly delicately, and shoves it to one side of his mouth so he can speak. "I suppose it depends on who you have in your twentieth century. Ray made them."

Chew chew chew. Not bad.

She smirks at him, laughing a bit, shaking her head.

"Another one of Ray's inventions, hmm? Well, then. I'll have to ask him about it. He can tell us whether or not the fields will interfere with one another."

"Oh." He hadn't thought of that. But that's why he asks before he just duct tapes the thing to his bag.

"Would it do that, you think?" She's definitely ahead of him when it comes to tech.

"It shouldn't. It only bends light. But this is why we test these things. So we know for certain."

She leans up and touches his cheek, her thumb wiping away a crumb of rabbit at the corner of his mouth. "I just want you to be safe, that's all."

"Well, that is the idea behind being able to turn invisible," he answers mildly, smirking at her.

"Yes, it is. But remember, it's only a screen. They can still hear and smell you. And if you're moving, they'll see a ripple of distortion. It's not perfect invisibility."

She frowns a little, studying him. "I can work on that after we get the recorder working, if you like."

Her mind is already racing, thinking of all the different man portable cloaking devices she's heard of.

"It's better than nothing," he shrugs.

"And I'd like that, though there's no rush. I've operated for years without one; at most this will open up more mission opportunities."

Or save his skin in a tight spot, but who likes to admit they get into those?

He offers her another piece of rabbit.

"Hmm, not exactly your most persuasive argument, love. But we'll see."

She takes it with a bit of a playful growl, nipping at his fingers.

"They'd also be missions where I'd be less likely to be caught- hey! You're worse than Damocles.

"Just for that, you don't get any more."

"Fine," she flops back onto the blanket, stretching languidly in the sun, grinning mischievously.

"Two can play at that game, you know."

"That's completely-" Fair, actually. Damn.

"Not what I meant," Richard finishes lamely.

She laughs, and the sound melts into a croon. Her scent ripples with affection for him.

"Awww, was only kidding." She holds out her hands to him, beckoning him back.

He looks at her sidelong for a long moment. "I hear there are places with rules against cruel and unusual punishment."

Then he grabs a last mouthful of rabbit before setting it aside.

Love you, too, he says as he sprawls next to her.

"My poor wolf," she teases, pulling him close for a tender, lingering kiss.
