Oh, River is not a morning person, but this prank requires some dedication and preparation.  She has her sonic screwdriver set to wake her an hour before the alarm, and she'd packed the blanket and the picnic basket the afternoon before while he was out running.

The matter of the prank itself is a simple few moments with the screwdriver on the red setting.  Quick.  Harmless.  And best of all, reversible. 

She still expects to get a bit of a hiding for it, but he did throw down the gauntlet.  Her cheeks ache from grinning at the very thought of the look on his face when he figures out just what she'd done.

Prank accomplished, she slips into her boots and shushes Damocles, swearing him to silence.  Rather, bribing him with future promises of bacon.  She leaves the note on the pillow and catches herself just before she kisses him on the cheek.  If he wakes, the surprise will be ruined before she can make her escape. 

Dear Richard~

Have been kidnapped by rabbits.  They said something about their pelts being used for "unseemly" purposes. Their leader says, if you ever want to see me again, come alone.

Richard eyes her.

"Fair enough. Being an insignificant predator species, then."

He sniffs and turns his own rabbit. "Where's that rock? We're going to want to start heating it up if we're going to cook the bacon."

Bacon?

Just eat your rabbit, you.

"Yes, bacon, Dam. And you can have my share." To Richard. "I promised."

She reluctantly gets up and retrieves the picnic basket. She returns to the fire side, and takes out a litre bottle of water, using it to wash her hands and the flat stone at the same time. She dries both her hands and the stone with her skirts. That done, she slides it closer to the fire and takes out the bacon to be warmed, laying it out in careful lines.

"He told me," Richard says dryly, watching her move about with some appreciation.

Though the skirt hides a lot.

There are plates in the picnic basket, and flatware. The linen napkins are a bit muddy, but she shrugs to herself and shakes them out. Luckily the wine glasses were secured. She looks back at Richard.

"Did you want wine with breakfast or shall we save that for later?"

"I could go for a drink," he admits, eyes flicking up to meet hers. All the excitement this morning followed by surprise hike? He's a little thirsty.

She holds his gaze for a moment, a smile forming on her lips. Is that a flush of heat in her cheeks too? Perhaps.

She turns back to the basket, digging out the cork puller. It only takes a few moments of wrestling with the wine bottle before he hears a soft pop as the cork gives way. Holding both glasses in one hand and the opened bottle in the other, she returns to his side, settling down beside him with a quiet oomph.

She smells so good.

So does the food. The bacon is starting to sizzle a bit, as is his rabbit, and he turns the latter before drawing his knife and poking at the pig bits. If it ends up sticking to the rock, he suspects Dam will get all of it and he'd like at least one slice.

"Pull mine out, would you?" She gestures with her chin at the rabbit. It's just barely done enough to be considered cooked. Her hands are full as she fills both wine glasses.

Richard blinks.

"If you're sure," he says, vaguely puzzled and curious all at once. The rabbit gets hefted out of the fire and away from both of them so its drippings don't burn anyone.

"I'm hungry," she explains, nestling the wine bottle into a small depression in the grass. "It was a bit of a hoof to get here, and I was hungry when we left."

She's holding both wine glasses now, waiting for him.

This requires some shuffling of what's in what hand. The knife gets sheathed, the spit gets put into that hand which then offers it to her as he reaches out with the now free hand to take the wine.

"It's hot." And rather on the rare side, but he suspects she knows the latter.

"Thank you." She takes the spit, taking a deep whiff and humming her approval. "Smells delicious."

Carefully, she holds the stem of the wineglass in her fingers, and the end of the spit between her thumb and hand. She manages to strip off a hind leg, wincing at the heat. She blows on it for a few moments before sinking her teeth in.

Seems his woman appreciates rabbit on the rare side.

Richard's head is tilted as he watches her.

"I think I love you."

She rolls her eyes at him, but there is a definitely a flush of colour in her cheeks at his words.

"Eat your breakfast, you."

She sips her wine and watches him, a secret smile on her lips. The one she only ever smiles for him.

He grins a little smugly and tugs his own rabbit to him. He lets it drip free a moment over the still sizzling bacon, adding flavour.

He doesn't bother to rip anything off, just carefully nibbles a hot strip free and chews.

Plaid rabbits are definitely the best tasting.

They eat in companionable silence, and River wasn't lying when she said she was hungry. She strips the carcass clean and only throws a few scraps to Damocles.

When there's a lull, she bumps him gently and clinks the rim of her glass against his. "To us."

Richard rescues the bacon part way through, as well, giving Dam his share and splitting his own with River.

"To us."

When she's done with her portion, she finishes her wine and sets the glass aside before rising. She looks back at him, considering for a long moment, before kneeling to spit another rabbit, laying it across the flames. That done, she takes their first round over to the refuse pile.

She comes back, and settles next to him with the bread and cheese. This time she leans in to whisper against his ear, her voice pitched low. "Thought you might still be hungry."

"You know me so well," he murmurs back, lipping her ear.

He's very lucky, isn't he?

She shivers at the touch of his mouth, her head curling towards his. "I would know you even better, my love. Before the day gets too much older."

"I can get one of the blankets out," he offers. The den may not hold them, but the ground certainly can.

He should have thought of that sooner.

She purrs her approval of this idea against the side of his neck, already nuzzling, her tongue darting out to taste the salt of his skin.

"Finish your breakfast."

Her scent whispers to him.

"I'm afraid I'm a little distracted, love."

Cheese is about the last thing on his mind when she starts doing that.

She withdraws just a hair, so that only her breath is touching him. "Shall I go stand over there? Maybe have Dam show me the perimeter?"

"If you like. Don't have to. Not much to see, really."

He's leaning after her just a bit.
