Translation Fail Plot

Well, that was interesting, in a boring way. It's been a few days now of sitting on his skiff over the lake--over a writhing mass of magically-summoned fish and not-really-fish-at-all--but now the spell seems to be starting to wear off. The water below looks calmer, Loki hasn't had to throw any lampreys back into the water in a few hours, and the crowd of hungry shrieking seagulls that arrived on the second day is starting to thin out.

And the squid seem to have lost interest.

Which is nice. Because they've been grabbing his skiff every time he's tried to fly away from the situation, but now he's able to steer for shore, hop down to land, and make his way to the bar. (Because he's not a complete asshole (well he is, but whatever), Loki leaves the skiff far enough out over the water that the obsessed fish aren't flinging themselves onto the land trying to reach it.)

So....hey Milliways, WHAT'S UP? Can a slightly damp guy get a drink?

((It's been a week and the translation failure is wrapping up! It's been ridiculously fun to see all the threads coming out of this, I've loved it. Let's say tomorrow is the last day for new translation EPs, but obviously people can keep on with older EPs as long as they want.

Let's also say that the babel fish are starting to return to their normal ways, so there are more and more areas where the translation field works properly. But still some problems if you want!

And Loki still has Marvel-woo Allspeak going on, so the translation problem isn't a problem for him.))

Translation Fail Happy Hour

Cassian's finding the translation not working strange but not as bad as he expected. It makes Milliways feel more like the cantinas he's used to where most people speak Basic but not everyone and not all the time. Also it gives him a chance to speak Festian which he truly enjoys.

At the counter he gets a napkin from Bar and moves behind to figure out how to run a Happy Hour where no one can read the specials. He starts by writing them in Galactic Basic with the Aurabesh alphabet.

Then realizes not everyone will be able to read them and draws a bottle for ale, then a glass for whiskey and a mug with steam coming off of it for caf and hot chocolate. Once it looks like it will work, he finds a nice Alderaan ale to drink and watches and listens to the Bar.

OOC: Cassian speaks Galactic Basic which resembles English but isn't and Festian which is like Spanish but isn't. Let me know how much translation fail you'd like in the thread, I can do everything from understanding almost everything to needing charades.

Wilford needs to look at something that isn't a book written for a thirteen-year-old. He also needs to get something to eat before he collapses. Unfortunately, this means coming downstairs for a little while.

He could go home, but... no. He's not sure which is worse - staying here, or going back there, but he knows he's less likely to do something stupid here. Less likely to potentially ruin everything he's worked for.

Not that any of it really matters, in the grand scheme of things. Maybe he can go do whatever he wants, and things will still turn out, just as they're supposed to. Or maybe everything's already gone to hell, and this is the end result.

Trying not to think about any of this, and completely failing, Wilford makes his way over to the fireplace with a rice bowl and a fresh bottle of whiskey. And a new pack of cigarettes. If anybody wants to shout at him for smoking inside, they can get shouted at right back.

[ooc: Wilford is not currently experiencing any translation-based failures.]

Elrond Peredhil is intrigued.
So many languages.

It is clearly upsetting to a lot of people, so he is mindful of not letting his enthusiasm show.
And of course there is always a risk that it is somehow a part of something sinister.

Still.
Languages.

Varric got some requests from his publisher today. He's extremely suspicious of a few of her claims, but there's not much he can do about his supposedly awful Orlesian sales numbers just at the moment. It'll take him a while to get something written that suits their tastes. Maybe an awful romance serial? Something with a redheaded guard captain?

.... wait, it doesn't smell like the Hanged Man ...

"[Huh. Thought this place and me were on the outs,]" he says, and then pauses. "[Wait a second. When did they get this many different languages in here?]"

[OOC: Varric speaks the common tongue (or trade tongue), which sounds like English but isn't, and Orlesian, which sounds like French but isn't. He recognizes Antivan, Tevene, and Qunlat, but can't actually speak any of them.]

I've forgotten the others, but he was up to fifteen or sixteen different languages in which he could cuss. He used to run Happy Hours where he offered discounts to people who could teach him new curse words, so there is probably a good chance that he can swear in a language your pup recognizes.]

Also there's the whole thing with Nixon, but that's more of 'watching a train wreck in super slow motion' than 'actively keeping the world's shortest attention span from remembering Milliways'.

For now? There's a duct-tape-colored streak in the Bar working on the biggest pile of French fries he's ever managed to snare at once.

Getting a drink first is probably a good idea. She'll stump out to the back later (it's hard to do anything graceful in power armor and she just hasn't felt like taking hers off) and get some range practice in when she gets the chance. She's available either place, though.

Enjolras was planning to eat lunch with a book on economic theory of an interplanetary collective in what he's fairly (but not totally) certain is another universe from Earth. (There's a little note on the frontispiece saying that it's been reformatted from the original into book form, but he hasn't yet worked out what exactly that original is.)

That was back when the text was readable, not to mention the writing system.

He's talked to other French-speaking friends at this point enough to know what the gist of the problem is, even if he has no idea of what's actually caused this or how to fix it. Neither does anyone else, though, as far as he knows. So it's worth taking some time to sit in the main bar and see if he can learn anything more on the subject, or pass on what he does know to anyone else who hasn't gotten the memo yet.

...He's not really confident in his ability to learn more than anyone else has so far, given that his languages are limited and his understanding of magic is far more so. But it doesn't hurt to try.

Besides, it was lunchtime anyway.

(Dust from the Exalted Plains gets everywhere, you know.)

But the research texts she pulled from the library -- their writing no longer looks familiar. Except for the actual Thedosian documents she has, but the physics texts, and the nuclear reactor diagrams --

She can remember what they used to look like, but that isn't the same thing at all.

"[Damn]," she says in trade tongue, which sounds like English but isn't, really. Maybe someone who's already here knows what this is about?

Liranan looks up from his position under Ysa's chair, yipping sharply. Is something wrong?

[ooc: Ysalwen speaks the common tongue (or trade tongue), which sounds like English but isn't, Orlesian, which sounds like French but isn't, Antivan, which sounds like a cross between Spanish and Italian but isn't either of those, Qunlat, and Tevene, which sounds like Latin but super isn't. Ferelden's enjoyed a rare bit of quiet the past few weeks, so Alistair hasn't felt the need to sneak into Milliways for a breather. (To him, that's all it's been: a few weeks.) Unfortunately, that changed a couple of hours ago when an advisor deposited a report from the Dalish territories on his desk.

The news is...not good. The sort of not-good that might require an in-person visit.

And if Alistair is going to visit the Dalish? That brings a whole new set of problems completely independent of the whole kingly business.

He's by the fire, frowning down at the report (written in common tongue), as Fuzzy naps at his feet. A glass of wine rests on a small table next to his chair. This might become a two-glasses-of-wine report in an hour or so.

[Alistair speaks common tongue (which sounds vaguely like English), 101-level Orlesian (vaguely French), and a smattering of Tevene (vaguely Latin) and Elvhen. Though...let's be real, most of what he knows in Orlesian and Tevene is just curse words.

Fuzzy does not speak, because Fuzzy is a dog, but he responds to commands in common tongue.]

That's... That's a lot of fish. They're congregating in one spot in the lake, creating a ruckus. Baze is murmuring words in Jedhan to Chirrut, describing the way the creatures slimy, sinuous bodies slide over each other. All Chirrut can hear is splashing anyway, though there is a lot of that.

"[That one had five eyes, I think. I wonder how many of these animals are from Earth?]" Baze says, one arm wrapped around his friend.

"[Well, if they're all in one spot, they should be easy to catch. Do you think they'd make good eating?]" Chirrut asks back, more willing to get into this problem since he probably will not be asked to actually cook any of the said fish.

Baze throws his head back and laughs. "[You chowhound. Always thinking with your stomach.]" Baze clearly approves of this. Chirrut does need to eat, and, though he's been putting on weight since they've arrived at Milliways, it will never be enough for the mother hen.

"[If you want, I could eat less, but I was under the impression that was not appreciated...]" Chirrut retorts, unafraid to sass his much larger friend despite his proximity.

"[Don't you dare,]" Baze says, punching his friend in the chest.
